Sophal Ear of Occidental College and co-author Japhet Quitzon outline the economic benefits that the Chinese have brought to the ASEAN member nation, now a low middle-income country. The government of Prime Minister Hun Sen is counting on China to help it handle the immediate task of post-pandemic recovery and overcome longer-term structural challenges for the economy. The question is whether this dependency will be profitable and sustainable.
