The Black Elder Experience| An Ageing Population|2025
I came up with the idea for this film during one of my uni classes. I asked my tutor what he hated most about life, and he talked about the constant aches he feels in his body—something he really dislikes about getting older.
That conversation stuck with me for so long. Over time, I started speaking to more older people about how they feel about their age. I randomly went around Nottingham, asking elderly people questions about life, and some of their stories pulled me deeper into exploring the ageing experience—specifically for Black older people.
The film touches on themes like health, culturally sensitive care, loss of community, love, grief, and, in the end, death. Making this film has been such a journey. It’s taught me so much about life, introduced me to things I never knew about, and opened up different parts of myself. It’s something that has really nourished me deeply.
