When Infections and the Immune System Target the Brain
Dr. Craig Shimasaki of Moleculera Biosciences discusses how infections can impact the immune system and the brain, leading to the development of various neurologic and psychiatric symptoms.
Common infections—such as strep, influenza, and mycoplasma pneumoniae—can sometimes trigger an abnormal autoimmune response. In these cases, antibodies produced to fight off bacteria or viruses mistakenly target parts of the brain. This immune attack disrupts normal cell and receptor function, causing brain inflammation and a wide range of neuropsychiatric symptoms.
During his presentation, Dr. Shimasaki will outline key signs and symptoms that may help identify individuals with autoimmune-induced neuropsychiatric conditions. He will also explain how the Autoimmune Brain Panel™ can help clinicians determine whether a patient’s symptoms may be the result of an autoimmune process rather than a primary neurologic or psychiatric disorder.
Several patient cases will be reviewed, including individuals who tested positive on the Panel and experienced complete resolution of symptoms following appropriate treatment.
