Cofradía de la Luz is a picturesque town in the municipality of Cocula, Jalisco, whose origins go back to the former Hacienda Cofradía de la Luz. Since the 19th century, the Vizcarra family brought splendor to these agricultural lands, which once covered thousands of hectares of crops, pastures, and forests. The name of the town arose in honor of Luz Vizcarra, daughter of the landowners, and over time the community grew around rural life and the legacy of the hacienda.

The spiritual center and symbol of identity of the town is the Parish of the Lord of Mercy (Parroquia del Señor de la Misericordia), officially established as a parish on February 2, 2023, by the Archdiocese of Guadalajara. The church, built within the hacienda grounds, retains a sober and traditional air, with stone walls and simple architecture that highlights the community’s devotion. During religious festivities, the population gathers here, reinforcing the continuity between the hacienda’s past and the current life of the town.

Today, Cofradía de la Luz blends the memory of its agricultural heritage with the serenity of a village that preserves its essence.
