Microsoft layoffs 2026 and Microsoft buyouts: Approximately 60,000 employees are eligible for a new voluntary exit offer announced October 26, 2026. That is about 27% of Microsoft's last reported global workforce. This breaking Microsoft job cuts update explains buyout eligibility, severance, affected teams and the 2027 headcount warning.
Harj Singh examines CEO Satya Nadella's workforce restructuring, Chief People Officer Amy Coleman's employee memo and CFO Amy Hood's staffing outlook. The Grind Hotline connects today's Microsoft buyout news to the retirement offers, July layoffs and AI spending we covered earlier.
MICROSOFT BUYOUT ELIGIBILITY: WHO IS INCLUDED
Microsoft's Voluntary Exit Offer (VEO) applies to eligible employees in participating teams in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom and India. It covers level 70 and below, including general managers and some vice presidents, excluding corporate vice presidents. There is no minimum age or tenure requirement, and performance is not an eligibility factor.
Reported participating areas include AI experiences, Microsoft Copilot, CoreAI, Windows + Devices, Xbox, finance and human resources. Some Cloud + AI, MicrosoftAI and legal organizations partially participate. Marketing, commercial business and security are excluded. AI and Copilot roles can be included in the exit offer.
MICROSOFT EARLY RETIREMENT VS THE NEW BUYOUT
The spring Voluntary Retirement Program covered approximately 8,750 eligible U.S. employees under the age-plus-service Rule of 70. More than 30% participated. Microsoft still announced approximately 4,800 job eliminations on July 6, primarily in Commercial and Xbox. The retirement exits reduced the size of the layoffs; they did not eliminate them. Today's eligible population is nearly seven times as large.
Our earlier Microsoft reporting examined retirement packages, Azure hiring restrictions, the July fiscal-year reset and a profitable company reducing headcount. Coleman warned in July that further changes would reach other parts of Microsoft.
MICROSOFT SEVERANCE PACKAGE 2026: PAY, BENEFITS AND DEADLINE
The reported Microsoft buyout package resembles standard severance: pay based on tenure and level, continued stock vesting, limited healthcare and career-transition support. It lacks the extended healthcare feature of the retirement offer. Employees reportedly have until early December to decide, with departures at year-end.
DECLINING A MICROSOFT BUYOUT: LAYOFF RISK
Microsoft says voluntary exits do not replace involuntary job cuts when business conditions warrant them. Rejecting a buyout does not automatically mean dismissal. No public acceptance target or automatic penalty has been announced. The 60,000 figure measures eligibility, not 60,000 confirmed layoffs.
MICROSOFT LAYOFFS 2027: AMY HOOD'S HEADCOUNT OUTLOOK
Amy Hood forecast a year-over-year headcount decline in fiscal 2027, ending June 2027. That is a workforce forecast, not a confirmed new layoff total. Microsoft's July results reported $90 billion in quarterly revenue, up 18%, while headcount fell 2%. Its calendar 2026 capital expenditure outlook was approximately $175 billion, including infrastructure for cloud and AI.
This episode examines Microsoft AI restructuring, employee job security and the pressure that can continue after a voluntary separation offer. The business can grow while employment contracts.
