In search of a durable trap treatment I started a project to see if POR-15 could be used as a trap treatment. This is an outstanding product that I've personally used on a trailer and a receiver-mounted rack. It's commonly used during car restorations to paint rusted car frames. It's easy to apply, even over some rust and it's incredibly durable.
The product is like a very thick paint and had to be thinned beyond the specifications on the label to be used effectively as a trap dip. I mention this fact a couple of times in the video, but it's worth noting again that I'm using the product outside the scope of the product specifications at my own risk. If you do exactly as I've done you'll have good results, but be aware that it is going beyond the product specifications.
As you'll see in the video, this was a two-year project and I had good results. I'll continue to use this method for trap treatment in the future, until my supply runs out. I'll likely switch to the Rustoleum/Acetone (1:1) dip at that time. If sealed tightly, this dip will keep from year to year, unlike POR-15 that hasn't been thinned which doesn't keep very long once opened.
I've dipped body-grip traps, footholds, drags and Death-Klutch gopher traps. I have not and probably would not use this on DP traps. This method shines on body-grip traps and is very good on all other traps I've tried. Any chain is difficult to dip and this is no exception.
I do consider this project a success, however as I mention in the video, it's over twice as expensive as the Rustoleum/Acetone method. I don't think it's good enough to offset that cost difference, even though it is a very good treatment.
One final comment about Full Metal Jacket. In the beginning, I mention how I remove it with Purple Power. I don't dislike FMJ. I like it a lot on snares and continue to use it on snares. I don't think it holds up well enough on predator traps. However, if I was the type that pulled my traps after every catch to retreat, I'd use it exclusively. I just don't trap that way.
