Sky News host Andrew Bolt has shared a private conversation he had with Cardinal George Pell before his death, where the senior Catholic expressed his “disappointment” at Pope Francis’ stance on international affairs.
He said Cardinal Pell was disappointed Pope Francis did not stand up strongly against China’s persecution of Christians.
“Had not stood up strongly against the Russian invasion of Ukraine, he was not fighting for freedom as the great John Paul II did,” Mr Bolt said.
“And since then, Cardinal Pell has been named the author of a memo saying the leadership of Pope Francis has been a ‘disaster’, with the Pope going weak on key church teachings.”
Sydney's Catholic Archbishop Anthony Fisher said he does not know if Cardinal Pell had any connection to the memo.
“I think some of his concerns about some of the political stances of the Holy See would be shared by many people whether they are church people or others around the world,” he told Mr Bolt.
