How to lead without leading: A Clean Language approach to conversations in a complex world

I will explore the notion of ‘leading’ – particularly though metaphor, logic, presupposition and question structure – and how to be influential in a ‘clean’ way within the world of agile.

“We cannot not communicate” also means our words and behaviour cannot not lead others. This presents a potential paradox for those of us who would like to support others to come up with their own solutions, generate their own ideas and access the emergent wisdom in their system.

Rather than deny we ask leading questions, it is better to understand the subtle ways in which all communication can lead and unintentionally inhibit others’ creativity. Knowing how to ask high-quality questions on behalf of another person or group can transform conversations.

James Lawley studied with David Grove for 12 years. As a result he co-developed Symbolic Modelling and co-authored "Metaphors in Mind" with his partner Penny Tompkins. Together they have a private psychotherapy and coaching practice and teach Symbolic Modelling throughout the world – developing the developers of others.
