The Truth About SPF and PA Levels in Sunscreen🤔
-----------------------------------
So, why should we use sunscreen?
The sun emits harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays that can damage our skin. Prolonged exposure to these rays can lead to sunburn, premature aging, and an increased risk of skin cancer. Sunscreen, with its protective properties, helps to shield our skin from these harmful effects, making it an essential part of our daily skincare routine.
let's talk about SPF.
SPF is a measure of protection sunscreen gives against UVB radiation. The rating tells you how long the sun's UV would take to redden your skin compared with using no sunscreen. For example, in theory SPF50 would take you 50 times longer to burn than if you use no sunscreen.
UVB penetrates the top layer of the skin, called the epidermis. These rays are primarily responsible for causing sunburn and skin cancer. The higher the SPF number, the greater the level of protection. For example, SPF 30 blocks about 97% of UVB rays, while SPF 50 blocks about 98%. It's important to choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a minimum SPF of 30 to ensure adequate protection from UVB rays.
The thing that is even more important than the SPF itself is that you must renew your sunscreen; for example, when exposed to the sun for an extended period, it is better to do this every two or three hours because It is removed from the skin by perspiration. Naturally, water-resistant sunscreens take longer to be removed from the face and are more suitable for use in places such as outdoor pools and the sea, or in situations where a person sweats a lot.
Next, let's explore the PA value. PA stands for Protection Grade of UVA, and it indicates the level of protection that a sunscreen provides against UVA rays. UVA rays are responsible for premature aging and skin wrinkling and can also contribute to skin cancer. The PA rating is typically followed by plus signs, with more plus signs indicating higher protection. PA+ provides some protection, PA++ provides moderate protection, PA+++ provides high protection, and PA++++ provides very high protection against UVA rays.
