'Entirely preventable': Ohio mother urges gun safety after 9-year-old son’s death

Hanna Bell calls October 6, 2025 the worst day of her life.

Her 9-year-old son, Jaxon, was critically injured by a single gunshot wound to the head while playing in the basement of his Lancaster home with a neighboring child.

“It was the call you never want to get, that something bad had happened,” Bell told ABC 6 on Thursday. "When I pulled up at his dad's house, it was just everybody was there in my face, paramedics and neighbors. It's kind of like in the movies when there's a bomb that goes off and there is only ringing in your ear. Everything just slowed down."

Jaxon was rushed to Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus after first responders arrived at the home on Summitview Drive around 5:30 p.m. According to Lancaster police, the boy’s grandparents and uncle were home at the time of the shooting. Bell was on her way to pick her son up from his father's home when she heard what happened.

“Once I was at the hospital, I saw all of the 20-some doctors and nurses rushing in and out of his room,” she said. “They were just looking at me like they knew something that I didn’t know yet. And I knew, when my heart felt it, that my baby was gone.”
