Post-Isometric relaxation (PIR) involves combining stretching and contractions at the end range of a structure. This combination can assist in improving range of motion, tissue tension and strength at end range of motion. The following video covers PIR moves for the hamstrings, gastrocnemius, soleus and plantar fascia. Various lengths of stretches and contractions can be used for this but it is typically suggested to do 15-20 second stretches with 5-10 second contractions. It is very important to use light force and not heavy contractions with the contraction portion. Injury can occur with maximum contractions so please utilize 5-10% of maximum contraction unless otherwise prescribed by a healthcare provider.
