Following the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision striking down key Trump-era tariffs, Asian countries are unlikely to pursue aggressive trade renegotiations with Washington, according to Henry Gao, law professor at Singapore Management University. Gao said most Asian economies view the U.S. not only as a major export destination but also as a security, technology and financial partner, prompting a strategy of risk management rather than confrontation.
Despite the court setback, President Donald Trump moved swiftly to introduce new tariffs under Section 122 of the Trade Act of 1974. Gao noted that while high-level diplomacy may continue, substantive changes in U.S.-China trade ties remain unlikely without major domestic shifts in either country.
