The Life of Kim Il-sung
Kim Il-sung was born on April 15, 1912, in Mangyongdae, near Pyongyang, during Korea’s occupation by Japan. In his youth, he became involved in communist and anti-Japanese guerrilla movements, eventually joining forces with the Soviet Union during World War II.
After Japan's defeat in 1945, Korea was divided into North and South, and with Soviet support, Kim became the leader of North Korea in 1948. In 1950, he launched the Korean War by invading South Korea — a brutal conflict that ended in 1953 with no clear victor, just a heavily militarized border.
Kim went on to establish a totalitarian regime centered around his own personality cult and the ideology of Juche, or self-reliance. His rule was marked by strict control, widespread propaganda, and the isolation of North Korea from much of the world.
He remained in power until his death in 1994, after which his son, Kim Jong-il, succeeded him. Even after death, Kim Il-sung remains the country's "Eternal President", a title enshrined in North Korea’s constitution.
