Описание: A settlement refers to any form of human habitation where people live, either permanently or temporarily. Settlements are broadly categorized into rural and urban settlements based on factors such as size, population density, economic activities, and infrastructure.

A rural settlement is a type of settlement found in the countryside, often characterized by low population density, scattered dwellings, simple infrastructure, and primary economic activities such as farming, fishing, and mining. Examples of rural settlements in Zimbabwe include Gokwe, Buhera, Tsholotsho, and Mudzi.

📌 10 Characteristics of Rural Settlements
1. Low Population Density
Rural settlements typically have fewer people per square kilometre compared to urban areas. Homes are often scattered or clustered in small villages, and large tracts of land are unoccupied.

2. Simple and Basic Infrastructure
Infrastructure such as roads, schools, clinics, and electricity supply is often limited and underdeveloped. Many rural areas rely on gravel or dirt roads, boreholes for water, and may lack reliable electricity.

3. Dependence on Primary Economic Activities
The majority of residents engage in primary activities like crop farming, livestock rearing, fishing, and small-scale mining.
Example: In areas like Chiredzi, residents focus on cattle rearing and subsistence farming.

4. Small Settlement Sizes
Rural settlements usually consist of small villages or hamlets rather than large towns or cities. Settlements may be scattered, linear along roads or rivers, or nucleated in small clusters.

5. Traditional Lifestyles and Cultural Practices
Rural areas often maintain traditional ways of life, including cultural ceremonies, indigenous knowledge systems, and practices passed down through generations.

6. Limited Social Services
Facilities such as healthcare centres, schools, and recreational amenities are few and widely spaced. Many residents travel long distances to access these services.

7. Strong Community Ties
Rural settlements are characterized by close-knit social relationships where people know each other personally, and social support systems like communal work (nhimbe/ilima) are common.

8. Proximity to Natural Resources
Most rural settlements are located near natural resources such as rivers, fertile soils, or grazing lands, which support their farming and livelihood activities.
Example: Villages near Save River in Manicaland benefit from water for irrigation.

9. Low Levels of Industrial Development
There’s usually minimal or no industrial activity in rural settlements. Any industries present are small-scale, such as grain milling or rural workshops.

10. Vulnerability to Natural Disasters
Due to their dependence on the natural environment and limited infrastructure, rural settlements are more susceptible to hazards like droughts, floods, and pest outbreaks.
Example: Chimanimani rural areas were severely affected by Cyclone Idai in 2019.
