Appartenente alla famiglia dei Cyprinidae e deriva dall' Asia orientale ma possiamo trovarlo anche in Europa. Il Carassius Auratus originario presenta una struttura fisica ben proporzionata con corpo affusolato ma robusto, è Color rosso-arancio e dotato di grandi scaglie robuste. È capace di adattarsi a basse temperature ed è un pesce molto longevo, addirittura arriva a 20/30 anni di vita, tutte le pinne sono proporzionate ma grazie a molti incroci sono state create le varietà più strane e più diverse tra loro sia per quanto riguarda i colori sia la forma del corpo e degli occhi. Queste specie sono più fragili e necessitano di maggior cure per quanto riguarda le temperature e i valori.
