You might come across similar compotes labeled Westmoreland glass or possibly even Jeannette, but this compote is not a later a reproduction. This antique compote is an original, from which various later versions are a copy, and is an antique United States Glass Company, or U.S. Glass Co (USGC) Ruby Stain Crystal Wedding Pattern Tall Compote from the Victorian Era, 1891.
How can you distinguish original U.S. Glass pieces from later reproductions? A myriad of markers: firstly the compote is unmarked, it contains air bubbles (which can lend to authenticity), contains straw markings and other irregular lines from the glass pressing and cooling processes, the particular handle details, and most importantly, the inclusions of scallops on the compote base's stem (reproductions styles do not have this essential scallop).
Early American Pressed Glass Note: Adams and Co (1861-1891) first produced this pattern, called Crystal Wedding, in clear only which was introduced in 1890. The pattern was then continued by U.S. Glass Co in 1891, in ruby and other colored stains when Adams closed. Other manufacturers have since copied this style.
