12th session of UNESCO's intangible cultural heritage opens on Jeju Island

UNESCO convened a meeting on Korea's Jeju... to look at important pieces of world culture to be added to its list for preservation.
Candidates for multiple cultural registers, including the list of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity... and the Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding... will be considered during the six-day event.
Other discussion topics include ways to improve the convention and the allocation of funds.
There are around 50 nominations this year, including Germany's organ craftsmanship and music.
Korea has 19 items included on the intangible cultural heritage list, the latest addition: women divers or Haenyeo.
Its next items to be reviewed: Ssirum... or traditional wrestling.
