Two crew members, one Greek and one Danish national, were killed, while two others, one Greek and one British national, were recovered alive and taken to the 251 General Air Force Hospital. The aircraft were Bell 214ST helicopters leased from Australian firm McDermott Aviation, operating in formation as part of the aerial firefighting response, which is typically coordinated through strict protocols involving a lead coordination helicopter. The helicopters had taken off from Elefsina military airbase. The wildfire, which began Friday near Agios Vasileios before spreading toward Porto Germeno, forced the evacuation of Kandili, Agia Skepi and Toutouli as strong winds drove flames deeper into the region and hampered aircraft attempting to draw water from the sea. Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis was briefed on the operation.
