The "Chief Minister's Girl Child Protection Scheme" is a significant initiative primarily implemented by the Government of Tamil Nadu, India, aimed at empowering girl children from economically disadvantaged families. The scheme focuses on promoting girl child education, discouraging gender discrimination, improving the child sex ratio, and encouraging small family norms.
Provide financial assistance to girl children from poor families.
Promote girl child education and ensure their retention in school up to at least the intermediate level.
Encourage girls to marry only after the age of 18 years.
Incentivize parents to adopt family planning norms with one or two girl children.
Protect the rights of girl children and provide them with social and financial empowerment.
Strengthen the family's role in improving the status of the girl child.
Scheme Variations (as of current information):
There are generally two schemes under the Chief Minister's Girl Child Protection Scheme:
Scheme-I (for families with one girl child):
An amount of ₹50,000 is deposited as a fixed deposit (FD) in the name of the girl child.
The FD is renewed every five years.
An annual incentive of ₹1,800 is provided from the 6th year of the deposit to help with education expenses.
The deposited amount along with accrued interest is given to the girl child when she attains 18 years of age, provided she appears for the 10th standard public examination.
Scheme-II (for families with two girl children):
An amount of ₹25,000 is deposited as a fixed deposit (FD) in the name of each of the two girl children.
Similar to Scheme-I, the FD is renewed every five years, and an annual incentive of ₹1,800 is provided from the 6th year for each girl child.
The deposited amount with interest is released to each girl child upon reaching 18 years, subject to them appearing for the 10th standard public examination.
Eligibility Criteria:
Annual Family Income: The annual income of the parents of the girl child should not exceed ₹ 120000
