Choroid plexuses in the brain which are responsible for producing cerebrospinal fluid can develop cysts in utero which then are called choroid plexus cysts (CPC).
If there are no other abnormalities in the baby they are called isolated cysts. Sometimes especially when accompanied by other anomalies either in the brain or other parts of the fetal body, the risk of Trisomy 18 (and sometimes Trisomy 21) may be increased, so either a NIPT test (fetal DNA) or amniocentesis (depending on the individual case) may be indicated.
Sometimes the so called "spongy choroid" may be mistakenly diagnosed as a CPC, but the spongy choroid is not so well demarcated as the CPC, this is the key to avoid the false diagnosis.
