Venue: Botanic Garden University of Alberta - Aga Khan Garden Amphitheater

Accomplished artists Shabnam Merali, Dr. Karim Gillani & The Sufi Ensemble performed two enchanting Sufi music candlelight concerts to a packed audience on September 4th and 5th 2021 at the wonderful Aga Khan Garden Amphitheater - Unversity of Alberta Botanic Garden.

The event featured sublime messages of love and peace through soulful performance of various classical Sufi poetry from South Asia delivered through diverse musical genre including Qawwali, Kafi, Geet, Ghazal and Dhammal. For Sufis, music is the feast for the soul and connection with the divine.

About the Artists:

The Sufi Music Ensemble is led by accomplished artists Shabnam Merali and Dr. Karim Gillani, who have performed globally and released original devotional albums worldwide. This unique ensemble brings their South Asian, East African and North American backgrounds to their tabla, guitar and keyboard music.

Shabnam Merali is an accomplished vocalist and musician. She has skillfully mastered the world of Ghazals, Sufi Kalam, Qawwalis, Ginans, Qasidas and various other genres of music in languages such as Urdu, Gujarati, Sindhi, Kiswahili, Punjabi, Siraiki. She has performed internationally on many platforms and has released many albums worldwide with original compositions, some of her albums include Expressions, Khushi, Shan-e-Ali, Shukrana, Suhana Safar and Shahnaama e Karimi.


Dr. Karim Gillani is an accomplished vocalist, composer, songwriter and musician. He received his PhD in Music and Religious Studies from University of Alberta in 2012. His PhD is a pioneering work on the music of Ismaili ginans. Dr. Gillani has successfully released four original albums worldwide and has also performed globally and in the presence of various dignitaries including H.H Prince Karim Aga Khan and the former Prime Minister of Canada Stephen Harper.
