Serving Seattle & EastsideWhat is the puzzle of the monkey? Or is it a Monkey's puzzle? This tree was considered ultra-trendy back in the 60's and as a result became so popular, the Seattle World's Fair handed out saplings of the famed tree to attendees. They are a very unique tree with an ancestry dating back to the days of dinosaurs. It got its name back in the mid-1800s when Charles Austin, a noted barrister, upon seeing the tree for the first time commented that climbing the spiny branches would be a puzzle even for a monkey. That isn't the case. Believe it or not monkey's can climb these trees. The only tree known to thwart a monkey is the banana tree due to it's absence of branches, a requirement for monkeys to climb. Probably why they like bananas so much. You tend to want what you can't have.
