What a brutal experience at the U15 German Road Championship in Linden near Kaiserslautern.

With a 12:15 PM start and over 30°C in the sun, the conditions were already tough. The course was even tougher: nearly 330hm per lap, a brutal 20% ramp, and two laps just shy of 20km each.

The first climb was neutralised to prevent the pure climbers from deciding the race 150m after the start — smart call. My first lap went to plan and I was right behind the lead group going into lap two. But then... disaster hit.

On the steep ramp, my exercise-induced asthma flared up again, and my right leg cramped so badly I had to stop and even fell over onto the grass. I lost about 30 seconds just trying to get back up and moving. The rest of the race, I pushed through with pain, finishing in 25th out of around 70 finishers (over 100 registered starters).

I missed my personal goal and was really disappointed.

Looking back, I made a critical mistake: I drank less than 100ml during the whole race — not nearly enough for a course and heat like this. That lack of hydration likely triggered both the asthma symptoms and the cramp. A painful but valuable lesson learned. Onwards and upwards. 💪
