Diagnosis: EGR Valve Causing Difficult Start-Up • Cars Simplified

Starting with the basics, the battery was fully charged and the starter was confirmed to be turning the flywheel. Next, the OBD-II scanner was plugged in to check for codes. Even though the check engine light hadn't illuminated, six trouble codes were saved in the computer:

#P0404: Exhaust Gas Recirculation Control Circuit Range/Performance
#P0302: Cylinder 2 Misfire
#P0303: Cylinder 3 Misfire
#P0305: Cylinder 5 Misfire
#P0306: Cylinder 6 Misfire
#P0300: Random/Multiple Misfire

Since an EGR valve working improperly can cause misfires, particularly at start-up, that was the first trouble code to look into. Removing and cleaning the EGR valve was an easy but time-consuming task, but that was all it ended up needing in order to fix the starting issue. After a standard drive cycle was completed, all the trouble codes were gone.

Verdict: The EGR valve was malfunctioning (most likely stuck open) and allowing exhaust gasses to enter the intake in unpredictable amounts. Cleaning the carbon out of it allowed it to function properly.
