The three major nationally acclaimed organizations that have conducted research into thunderstorm electrical activity over the past half century are Langmuir Lab and the University of New Mexico Mining and Technology (New Mexico Tech), Los Alamos National Labs, and the Severe Storms Research Center of Georgia Tech Research Institute. All are closely affiliated with NASA.
Bernard Vonnegut published the Electrical Theory of Tornadoes in 1960 and promoted the theory with his colleague C.B. Moore to the end of their lives. Vonnegut received his PhD in physical chemistry from MIT in 1939. Moore received his degree in chemical engineering from Georgia Tech. Moore and Vonnegut conducted research and jointly published hundreds of papers on the subject of sferics while at Langmuir Lab for decades. Moore became chairman of the lab in 1969, nominally retiring from that position in 1985.
Mr. E. F. (Gene) Greneker, served as Principal Research Scientist in the Sensors and Electromagnetic Applications Laboratory, Radar Systems Division at GTRI. He received his Master of Science degree from the Georgia institute of Technology and his Bachelor of Science degree from Georgia State University. He has served as Project Director of over 35 major sponsored research projects during his 27-year career as a member of the GTRI technical staff and member of the Georgia Tech General Faculty, each of which incorporated radar as the central focal point.
Vulcan Technologies is a member of the Advanced Technologies Development Center of Georgia Tech and worked with Georgia Tech engineers to develop the research unit and production models of the tornadoAlert. Vulcan Technologies is now a partner with the Georgia Tech Research Institute conducting research into electromagnetic means of detecting and categorizing severe and tornadic storms. Chief Technology Officer Richard Carlisle, founder of Vulcan Technologies, met with Gene Greneker and John Trostel of GTRI to compare notes of their research and experiences in March 2017.
