The Block is a hugely important concept in BJJ. It actually combines many principles - connection, structure, framing - and applies in many different situations, both offensively and defensively. I first became aware of this from watching Demian Maia's 'Science of Jiu Jitsu', before a series of shoulder injuries encouraged me to roll with my elbows glued to my sides. Recently, I've seen Gordon Ryan focusing on the knee to elbow movement as a vital part of defending and escaping.
Keep your elbows and knees close to your body so that there is no space for your opponent to exploit. You're trying to stop your opponent from getting to the space between your hips and your armpit. This applies both offensively and defensively, in numerous positions. If this structure is broken and you find yourself in a bad position, try and clear this space and get your structure back. Even when your knee or elbow is not tight to your body, you should keep them connected to each other where possible as this will reinforce the frame.
