Many of you are familiar with open chords and barre chords. They are the staples of guitar playing. In this lesson I discuss and demonstrates chord inversions.
Inverting a chord is, by simple definition, spelling the chord, or building the chord, by rearranging the order of notes. Though the resulting chord is the same chord, spelling it differently results in changes in sound that are often drastically different than the standard chord we are most familiar with.
Beginning with an A major chord, Geoff shows you three variations of the A major chord, then he puts it in a simple chord progression and shows you how to alternate between the A major chords to open up the sound of the progression.
I also examine the concept of moveable chords, showing you how to use these chord inversions in such a way that you only have to move the shape from one position on the neck of the guitar to another to get a different chord without having to change the fingering.
I discuss the moveable minor shape as well, allowing you even more musical possibilities.
This is a fantastic lesson that helps you learn the neck of the guitar, expands your creative potential, and allows you to get away from the same old chords you’re used to playing. If you’re writing your own stuff or just tired of playing the same old thing, there’s nothing better than inverting chords and learning new shapes to open things up and expand your boundaries.
