VICTORIA - There's a free house on Shelbourne Street in Victoria. The house is owned by Greater Victoria Jehovah's Witness community who purchased the house and land during the build of the Island's largest Kingdom Hall which is right next door. The previous owners were worried the year-long construction of the Kingdom Hall would be disruptive.
The new hall will host seven congregations. It is expected to be finished by next month. A volunteer, faith-based workforce was largely responsible for raising the building. Had the build been contracted out the price tag would have been about 5.6 million dollars, thanks to the volunteers it came to half that.
The free house is about 1200 square feet with three small bedrooms. It was built in the 1920s and extra rooms were added in the 1940s. The home is free but potential owners will have to relocate it and assume liability for the move.
