The “scapegoat,” as we apply the term in social psychology, is the individual or group that a community accuses of causing misfortune within it. The community in crisis identifies the “wrongdoer,” blames them for the crisis, isolates them, and casts them out or wages war against them. How is this dynamic playing out in American society today where a Christian-instigated culture war is waging based on the blaming and othering of specific groups?
The question becomes crucial when one considers that in Christian tradition, the scapegoat is Jesus Messiah: the redeemer, healer, and reconciler. Is Jesus functioning in the Christian psyche as redeemer, or is he the scapegoat? This discussion examines the concept of scapegoating as a complex that is entrenched in the socio-religious consciousness and a deterrent to collective and individual healing. Along Jungian lines, it compares this to the original redemptive purpose of the scapegoat in order to examine avenues of escape from the cycle of blame and violence.
