Ford is saddling up the Mustang with new standard features for 2018. Key among those is a standard electronic line-lock, which previously only came with the V8 GT. That means rubber burning sweetness for the masses.

Yes. You read that right, this crazy cool track feature that spins the wheels before launching to warm up the rubber will come with ALL 2018 pony cars. That includes all of the EcoBoost engines.

It’s not just a smoke show either, it’s the legit burnout feature and you can see what’s happening even from inside the cockpit with an “Industry first,” mind you, animation of a spinning wheel burning out on the optional 12-inch all-digital instrument display. That way, if you can’t tell from all the smoke and noise coming from your ‘stang, you’ll know line-lock is working.
“Burnouts never get old, no matter how old you are and how many times you’ve done them. Who would have thought that we would see an EcoBoost Mustang producing 15 seconds of fury like this? You’ve got to love these rad things Ford is doing,” said Vaughn Gittin Jr., Formula Drift Champion.

Not to worry though, burnout doesn’t just engage without your permission. It starts when you select the electronic line-lock from the menu in the instrument cluster using the levers on the steering wheel. All it does is hold the car in place when you hit the throttle making the rear wheels spin out for up to 15 seconds.

If you’re lucky enough to drive in amateur, or mature, races – especially bracket races – line-lock will help make your times more consistent. If not it’s a great way to storm out of a bad date or make the neighbor’s mouths drop.

Other 2018 tweakings are a fresh front and rear fascia that are “leaner and meaner,” upgrading to the technology (including the fancy burnout graphic seen above), new driver assist features including Pre-Collision Assist with Pedestrian Detection, and – of course – better overall handling with a brand spanking new 10-speed auto transmission. Hold that thought, you can still go classic six-speed manual if you want.

No word yet on how these new standard features will affect pricing.
