With 16 fatal fires this year, Cleveland Fire officials issue holiday safety warning

With the holidays approaching — and a winter storm expected on Thanksgiving — Cleveland firefighters say they typically see an uptick in calls.
Cleveland Division of Fire Public Information Officer Lt. Mike Norman says Thanksgiving and Christmas consistently lead to more cooking-related fires and burn injuries.
So far this year, Cleveland has recorded 16 fatal fires — the most the city has seen since 2006. Norman says many of those deaths could have been prevented with working smoke alarms.
"The vast majority of them, could be prevented with working smoke alarms. That's the biggest thing. Working smoke alarms protect you when you're sleeping. That's why we want to make sure that there's a working smoke alarm in every bedroom, you know, anywhere that people sleep, and on every floor of the house," Lt. Norman said.
