The face of a raga is most expressively portrayed through its alap. In this leisured, opening part of his exposition, the musician traces the melodic contours of a raga. In this album, Sarod maestro Amjad Ali Khan has chosen two ragas of varying moods for his recital. He begins the recital with the grand and majestic Jaijaiwanti of the night and moves onto the sweet, yet poignant Kirwani, a Carnatic raga that has found favor with North Indian musicians as well. Amjad Ali khan who began playing the sarod when he was just 6, is India’s greatest artist in the instrument.
