In this video, I’m taking a close look at a 1915 British Silver Crown, a large and impressive coin struck during the height of the First World War.
This Crown was issued under the reign of King George V, at a time when Britain was facing enormous economic and military pressure. Despite wartime demands on silver, these Crowns were still produced, though many were saved rather than circulated, making them a fascinating historical piece today.
The obverse features a strong left-facing portrait of King George V, designed by Sir Edgar Bertram Mackennal, with the Latin inscription declaring him King of all the Britains. The reverse shows the famous St George and the Dragon design by Benedetto Pistrucci, symbolising courage, strength, and victory over adversity.
Struck in .925 sterling silver, the 1915 Crown weighs approximately 28.28 grams and measures 38.6 mm, giving it a real presence in the hand. Coins like this are popular with collectors for both their silver content and their direct connection to Britain’s wartime history.
Value today depends heavily on condition, with sharper detail and minimal wear making examples far more desirable.
Would you keep a coin like this for its silver, its history, or both?
