The Exaltation of the Holy Cross

This Feast celebrates https://tinyurl.com/3wrj5d5a two historical events: one- the discovery of the three https://tinyurl.com/bwj87m2e Crosses in the year 320 under the temple of Venus in Jerusalem, https://tinyurl.com/4657a8kp by Saint Helena, the mother of the Emperor Constantine, https://tinyurl.com/2p9p6uz3 and the other - the dedication of the Basilica which was built on Calvary, the site of the Crucifixion by Constantine in 335. On this Feast day, we take time to contemplate the significance and relevance of the Holy Cross.The Cross today, stands as the universal image of Christian belief, for Jesus died on the Cross in obedience to the will of God his Father to redeem humanity from their sins and eternal damnation.
For us believers firstly....1) The Cross is a symbol of Victory and power.
It is a powerful symbol of Christ’s victory over death and it is the power of God for us who are being saved says St Paul in his first letter to the Corinthians chapter 1: verse 18.
Secondly 2) The Cross is a Holy object, worthy of veneration.
We venerate the Cross today... as it held the Saviour's sacred body, it became the first altar of Christ’s redeeming sacrifice.
Therefore it is a precious symbol of Reconciliation between God and humanity, since the Most Precious Blood of Jesus was shed on it, the Blood which saves us.

Finally 3) The Cross is a most sublime symbol of God's love.

Only God who loves us, could suffer violence, hatred, cruelty meted out to him bearing the consequences of sin, to transform his death into a Supreme sacrifice of love.
So, we see the Cross becoming an essential part of daily Christian living.
The Cross of Christ not only frees us from sin and death but also enables us to live in union with God and in charity towards one another.
By daily living the Baptismal Consecration, that is saying no to sin and putting on the new nature of Christ, one can experience the saving activity of Jesus the Redeemer. Scripture says “He bore our sins in his body on the cross that we might die to sin and live in righteousness” and again “By his wounds we have been healed " and received grace upon grace.
The cross stands opposite greed, pride, and the desire for success and ... earthly honour. It compels us to consider eternity. There are many today who with simple obedience accept the cross of Christ. Our Blessed Mother, the first disciple of Christ, stood at the foot of the Cross, accepting the agony and shame of the Cross, thus sharing in the redeeming act of Christ. May we follow in the footsteps of Christ and share in his sufferings that we may also share in his glory. We are never alone for we are always in union with him as vine to the branches.
Remember his promise? I am always with you, till the end of time.
The cross of Christ is our salvation and hope.
