Ms. Bonner is a native Houstonian and graduate of Booker T. Washington High School, was the coordinator of the HSPVA Vocal Music Department for 46 years. She holds bachelor of arts and master of education (emphasis in music) degrees from the University of Houston. In 1983 she was the HSPVA Teacher of the Year. In 1993 Ms. Bonner received the Price-Waterhouse Denney Award for Teaching Excellence, and in 1998 and 2000 she received the Presidential Scholars Teacher Recognition Award in Washington, D.C. In 2011 she was the recipient of the first Frazier-Merriman Award from the American Festival for the Arts. Her professional affiliations include the Texas Music Educators Association, the Texas Choral Directors Association, The American Choral Directors Association, the National Education Association, and the Texas State Teachers Association. She is the TMEA Region 23 Vocal Division secretary. A world traveler, Ms. Bonner is a member of the First United Methodist Church, where she is active in the Sanctuary Choir, Handbell Choir, Sunday School, and the Administrative Board.
