History of tea ceremony
The history of the tea ceremony actually begins in the Heian period, even before Sen no Rikyu.
It is said that it was introduced to Japan by the envoys to Tang Dynasty China, and at that time, only people of high rank could eat it.
It is said that tea at that time was fermented tea like oolong tea, not matcha, which is enjoyed in today's tea ceremony.
Tea perfected by Sen no Rikyu
When it comes to the tea ceremony, one must not forget about Sen no Rikyu.
At that time, flashy things like gambling were favored at tea ceremonies.
Toyotomi Hideyoshi's golden tea room is also known to show that tea was popular as a flashy item.
Juko Murata, Sen no Rikyu's teacher, forbade such flashy things and preached that the tea ceremony was a place of spiritual exchange between the host and the guests.
Later, his disciple Sen no Rikyu perfected wabicha.
