Josh Sigurdson explores the ancient ruins of Ouadane, Mauritania, deep in the Sahara Desert in Africa. A place that most are afraid to go, we went there on the road to the Richat Structure during the filming of our Atlantis documentary. It turned out to be both safe and beautiful. Considering the lack of video footage on the internet of this amazing site, we thought it necessary to document as much as possible while we still had room on our phone. Starting with climbing the stairs into the old city which used to be on a major trade route, a city that some theorize goes back as far as the 5th century, others claiming it's slightly more recent, we walk through alley ways that are still utilized by nomads with their goats and donkeys. The road literally ends at Ouadane with no further road for more than 350 miles through the desert to neighboring countries. To put that into context, it's 1.5 times the distance between Las Vegas and Los Angeles before you may see a sign of further civilization. It's remote.

With people still living in some of the shells of ancient buildings made in a less than sophisticated style, yet still standing the test of time more than a thousand years later, rubble fills alley ways and every now and then a person greets you and wishes you well on your journey.

Largely, the area is vacant of tourism except for the most daring of adventurers who disregard the claims of danger in the region which proves to serve them well as they end up interacting with incredibly kind people around every corner of the country.

It was a truly amazing experience. After night fall we are told not to walk the streets. Anam Paiseanta and Josh decide to sneak out anyways so that Anam can take some nighttime photography of the ruins. Dogs bark and tensions rise a little bit before we head back without any notable issues other than not being able to see where we were walking.

It was a once in a lifetime experience which we are looking forward to make happen twice. There is so much in the world to explore.
