Pakistan established diplomatic relations with Malaysia after its independence in 1957. Both countries have good economic relations as Malaysian exports $515.5 million worth of goods to Pakistan among them palm oil is the main item, while Pakistani exports to Malaysia was only 31.1 million dollars, which includes Rice, Onions and crude petroleum. Pakistan desiring to explore more joint ventures with Malaysian companies for the reason to boost trade and to build people to people contacts. Malaysia and Pakistan signed a free trade agreement under the title of Malaysia–Pakistan Closer Economic Partnership Agreement (MPCEPA) in January 2008. Pakistan still have a big scope of providing services to Malaysia.
