Описание: A sleeping mouse wakes up when a faint blue light switches on inside its head. A mouse that has just drunk its fill starts drinking again. A mouse in a safe box freezes in fear. No drugs, no electric zaps. The trick came from a tiny green pond alga with no brain at all, and it won the 2026 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for Karl Deisseroth, Peter Hegemann and Georg Nagel.

Hegemann guessed that the alga's light-catching protein is itself a gate. Nagel proved it in frog eggs: give a cell the alga's recipe, and blue light alone makes it send an electric signal (the protein is called channelrhodopsin). Deisseroth's lab at Stanford got it into chosen brain cells, giving scientists a remote control for the brain: which cells, on or off, exactly when. No science background needed: every step is shown in 3D.

💡 Try it yourself: switch a mouse's brain cells on and off, race the alga against your eye, and play the mini game "Light Lab"

Cells, proteins and brains are simplified models and the animations are illustrations, not real data. The blind patient's view is a rough impression. Narrated with a synthetic voice.
