The Japanese government and several of its largest banks are set to launch within the month a “green transformation” programme aiming to eventually attract 150 trillion yen (US$1.06 trillion) in investment over the next decade. The project will include banks such as Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group and will center around Sapporo, in the northernmost main island of Hokkaido, which in 2024 will be designated a special zone to attract renewable energy investment. The project will also include the Industry and the Environment Ministry.
The goal of the “green transformation” program is to transition Japan’s energy landscape towards sustainability and reduce the country’s carbon emissions. The program aligns with the country’s commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Japan has set an ambitious target of reducing emissions by 46% from 2013 levels by the year 2030. If successful, this reduction would result in 2030 emissions totaling 0.76 billion tones.
