You will gut hook far more striper using a small and/or offset circle hook then a standard J hook. WHY? The functionality and success of using a circle hook requires time and space. Time for the fish to swallow your bait and plenty of space for that circle hook to come back out and find its way on your stripers lip. In that time and space and if your circle hook is too small or offset there is a good chance it will find its way to a crevice in the gut or esophageal region or gills or deep oral cavity of your striped bass. A large 7/0-9/0 Inline Circle hook reduces this occurrence.

I guarantee if you use smaller hooks below you will find yourself gut hooking more bass then you ever had in your life. I personally and honestly can not remember the last time I gut hooked a striped bass using a standard J style hook. But I can recall gut hook several using smaller circle hooks intended for other targets.
