महाभारत हा एक प्राचीन संस्कृत काव्यग्रंथ आहे. महर्षी व्यास यांनी हा ग्रंथ गणपतीकडून लिहून घेतला अशी मान्यता आहे. या ग्रंथाचे आधीचे नाव जयदिप असे होते. महाभारत हा ग्रंथ भारताच्या धार्मिक, तात्त्विक तसेच पौराणिक महाकाव्यांपैकी एक आहे. जागतिक साहित्यातील महत्त्वाचा ग्रंथ असलेल्या महाभारताचा भारतीय संस्कृतीवरचा ठसा अमीट असा आहे. महाभारत हे महाकाव्य असून ते कुणाचे चरित्र नाही. महाभारताच्या कथेत मुख्यत्वे कौरव आणि पांडव यांच्या साम्राज्यात असलेल्या भारतवर्षाचाउल्लेख आढळतो. कौरव आणि पांडवांमधील कौटुंबिक वैर आणि त्यामुळे त्यांच्यामध्ये झालेले महायुद्ध हा महाभारतातील सर्वांत मोठा विषय आहे.

कर्ण हा महाभारतातील कुंती आणि सूर्य यांचा पुत्र होता म्हणून तो सूर्यपुत्र आणि कुंतीपुत्र या नावानेही ओळखला जातो. कर्ण हा दुर्योधनाचा परम मित्र होता. दुर्योधनाने त्याला अंग देशाचे राज्य दिले होते. राधा नावाच्या स्त्रीने त्याला लहानाचे मोठे केल्यामुळे तो राधेय ह्या नावाने ओळखला जात होता. तो आपल्या दानशूर पणा बद्दलसुद्धा प्रसिद्ध होता. कुंतीभोज राजाची कन्या कुंती हिच्या सेवेवर प्रसन्न होऊन दुर्वास ऋषिंनी तिला एका मंत्राचे वरदान दिले. त्या मंत्राचा वापर करताच ज्या दैवताचे स्मरण ती करेल, त्या देवाकडून तिला पुत्रप्राप्ती होणार होती. कुमारी असलेल्या कुंतीने सूर्याचे स्मरण करून मंत्रोच्चार केला, आणि मंत्राच्या प्रभावाने पुत्रप्राप्ती झाली. ह्या सुर्यपुत्राला जन्मतः अंगावर अभेद्य कवचआणि कानात कुंडले होती.

The Mahābhārata (Sanskrit: महाभारतम्, IAST: Mahābhāratam, pronounced) is one of the two major Smriti texts and Sanskrit epics of ancient India revered in Hinduism, the other being the Rāmāyaṇa. It narrates the events and aftermath of the Kurukshetra War, a war of succession between two groups of princely cousins, the Kauravas and the Pāṇḍavas.
The Mahābhārata offers one of the first instances of theorizing about dharmayuddha, "just war", illustrating many of the standards that would be debated later across the world. In the story, one of five brothers asks if the suffering caused by war can ever be justified.

Karna (Sanskrit: कर्ण, IAST: Karṇa), also known as Vasusena, Anga-Raja, Sutaputra and Radheya,[2]is one of the major characters in the Hindu epic Mahābhārata. He is the son of Surya (the Sun deity) and princess Kunti (later the Pandava queen). Kunti was granted the boon to bear a child with desired divine qualities from the gods and without much knowledge, Kunti invoked the sun god to confirm it if it was true indeed. Karna was secretly born to an unmarried Kunti in her teenage years, and fearing outrage and backlash from society over her premarital pregnancy, Kunti had to abandon the newly born Karna adrift in a basket on the Ganges. The basket is discovered floating on the Ganges River. He is adopted and raised by foster Sutaparents named Radha and Adhiratha Nandana of the charioteer and poet profession working for king Dhritarashtra. Karna grows up to be an accomplished warrior of extraordinary abilities, a gifted speaker and becomes a loyal friend of Duryodhana. He is appointed the king of Anga(Bihar-Bengal) by Duryodhana. Karna joins the losing Duryodhana side of the Mahabharata war. He is a key antagonist who aims to kill Arjuna but dies in a battle with him during the Kurushetra war.
