Directly recorded in the Unreal Engine 5.3 Editor, with Engine Scalability Settings Groups set to Cinematic and Material Quality Level set to Epic, this video showcases the intricacies of "Dismal Survival Raining Weather Effects," set against the backdrop of the Electric Dreams Environment Sample Project from the Unreal Engine Marketplace. The Electric Dreams Environment is a free downloadable sample project based on its GDC 2023 demo, highlighting Unreal Engine 5.2's new Procedural Content Generation (PCG) framework and the new material authoring system called Substrate Materials.
The Electric Dreams Environment Sample Project provides a glimpse into its jungle environment, meticulously crafted using a selection of Quixel Megascans assets.
Leveraging Procedural Content Generation (PCG), worlds come to life swiftly, adapting in real-time to gameplay dynamics or specific requirements. For creators embarking on virtual world construction, PCG offers a rapid and iterative design process.
The Procedural Content Generation framework (PCG) is a versatile toolkit designed for crafting procedural content within Unreal Engine 5. It empowers artists and designers to create dynamic tools and content of varying complexities, ranging from utility assets like buildings to expansive, immersive worlds.
Through the Electric Dreams Environment Sample Project, PCG emerges as a robust solution for tool creation, rule definition, and parameter exposure, facilitating the seamless integration of UE5 assets to populate expansive scenes. This approach ensures that the creation of large-scale worlds is not only swift but also interactive and resource-efficient.
The development journey of my solo project, "Dismal Survival: A Father's Journey," within UE5 is a thrilling adventure! The incorporation of features such as Procedural Content Generation and Substrate Materials represents major milestones, especially for developers aiming to streamline the creation of lifelike content and cutting-edge rendering.
It's crucial to acknowledge that the Substrate Material feature is currently in an experimental phase. Once converted, Substrate materials typically cannot be reverted to Legacy Materials, as conversions become permanent upon saving. However, by utilizing the "r.Substrate=True" (to enable Substrate) or "r.Substrate=False" (to disable Substrate) lines in the Config\DefaultEngine.INI file, it is indeed possible to revert a project from Substrate Materials back to Legacy Materials. Additionally, the Substrate Legacy Conversion Material Expression is automatically generated when opening Legacy Materials. If not entirely confident, I strongly advise saving a backup copy of the project before enabling Substrate.
Despite the ongoing experimental phase of Substrate, significant progress has been made in integrating Ultra Dynamic Sky with the Electric Dreams Environment Sample Project from the UE5 Marketplace. However, it's worth noting that Ultra Dynamic Sky is not yet intended to fully work with Substrate Materials due to technical limitations and compatibility issues. Since Substrate is still an experimental feature in development, it currently lacks support for many material techniques required by UDS for its features, particularly in the functionality of material techniques such as Rainbow Materials, Snow Weather Effects, and Surface Rain Effects. Nonetheless, the overall rendering performance has surpassed expectations, proving satisfactory.
This video not only highlights the nearly flawless integration of Ultra Dynamic Sky with Substrate Materials but also demonstrates their application within my survival game project, 'Dismal Survival: A Father's Journey,' which is fully optimized for Ultra Dynamic Sky and Substrate Materials Ready! While the majority of Dismal Survival's open world is handcrafted using Quixel Megascans assets, Procedural Content Generation has been strategically employed in specific areas to enhance dynamism and efficiency.
Looking ahead, there is an optimistic outlook for the resolution of compatibility issues between UDS and Substrate Materials by its creator. With seamless integration and functionality on the horizon, akin to the experience when using UDS with Legacy Materials, there is eagerness for the advancement of both features. Undoubtedly, this progress will unlock new creative possibilities for my survival game project.
