Global upstream oil and gas capital expenditure (capex) is projected to decline in 2026, marking the first annual contraction since 2020. Analysts expect a year-on-year drop of 2.5% to 4.3%, bringing total spending down to approximately $341.9 billion.

While oil investment falls, global gas spending is predicted to rise by 7% in 2026, driven by new LNG projects in Qatar, Canada, and the U.S.. Some U.S. shale operators, such as Expand Energy, also anticipate slight capex increases to meet growing gas demand.
