Climate activist and innovator Sonam Wangchuk has been released from Jodhpur Central Jail after nearly six months of detention, following the Indian government’s decision to revoke his preventive detention under the National Security Act (NSA) with immediate effect. Wangchuk was initially arrested in September 2025 in connection with protests in Ladakh demanding greater autonomy and statehood, which turned violent in some areas. His detention drew national attention, legal challenges in the Supreme Court, and political debate about freedom of expression and civic rights. The government’s sudden reversal comes amid public and political reactions, raising fresh discussion about the balance between security and civil liberties in India.
