On this Second Sunday of Lent, Year A, the Church leads us up the mountain to contemplate the mystery of the Transfiguration of our Lord Jesus Christ (cf. Gospel of Matthew 17:1–9). Jesus takes Peter, James, and John apart and is transfigured before them. His face shines like the sun, and His garments become white as light. For a brief moment, the disciples behold His divine glory.
This revelation comes before the scandal of the Cross. Before the agony of Calvary, Christ allows His disciples to glimpse His glory so that their faith may not fail in the hour of trial. The Transfiguration teaches us that suffering is not the end; glory awaits beyond the Cross.
In the first reading, we encounter the call of Abraham (cf. Book of Genesis 12:1–4a). God commands him: “Go forth from your land… to a land that I will show you.” Abraham departs in faith, not knowing the destination, but trusting the One who calls. Lent likewise is a summons to leave behind whatever distances us from God—sin, complacency, resentment, spiritual indifference—and to journey toward deeper communion with Him.
Then the Father’s voice resounds from the cloud: “This is My beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to Him.” This is the heart of Lent. Not merely to hear Christ, but to listen—to obey, to trust, to follow. We are called to ascend the mountain of prayer, to allow His light to penetrate our darkness, and to be transformed from within.
Peter desired to remain on the mountain: “Lord, it is good that we are here.” Yet the Christian life does not remain in moments of consolation. We must descend the mountain and walk the path of daily fidelity, carrying our cross with hope. The glory of Easter is reached only through the discipline of Lent.
As we continue our Lenten journey, let us ask ourselves:
Do I truly listen to Christ?
Am I willing to leave behind what hinders my growth in holiness?
Do I trust that beyond every cross there is resurrection?
May the light of Christ strengthen our faith, purify our hearts, and lead us to share in His everlasting glory.
Amen.
