Mahabharata – Season One, Episode 2 | King Shantanu and Goddess Ganga
Before the great war of Kurukshetra…
Before the legendary names of Arjuna, Karna, and Krishna echoed through history…
There lived a noble king whose life was forever changed by destiny.
In Episode 2 of our Mahabharata series, we explore the powerful and emotional story of King Shantanu and Goddess Ganga — a tale of love, vows, sacrifice, and divine purpose.
Hastinapur was a prosperous kingdom, ruled with wisdom and compassion by King Shantanu. Though respected by his people, the king carried a deep loneliness within his heart. Seeking peace, he often wandered along the banks of the sacred river Ganga — unaware that destiny awaited him there.
One evening, from the flowing waters of the river, a mysterious woman emerged. Calm, radiant, and beyond human beauty, she was none other than Goddess Ganga, though her divine identity was hidden at first. A bond formed instantly between them — a connection guided not by chance, but by fate itself.
King Shantanu asked her to become his queen, and she agreed… but on one unbreakable condition:
He must never question her actions — no matter how painful they seemed.
Blinded by love and trust, the king accepted this vow.
What followed was a heartbreaking sequence of events that tested Shantanu’s devotion, his patience, and his understanding of dharma. One by one, their children were returned to the sacred river, and the king remained silent — bound by his promise, even as his heart shattered.
Only when the eighth child was born did Shantanu finally break his silence. At that moment, Goddess Ganga revealed her true identity and the divine reason behind her actions. The children were the Ashta Vasus, celestial beings freed from a curse through her deeds. The eighth child, Devavrat, was destined to live a mortal life — one of unmatched discipline, honor, and sacrifice.
Having fulfilled her divine purpose, Goddess Ganga disappeared into the river, taking Devavrat with her to raise him away from worldly attachments.
King Shantanu was left alone once more — heartbroken, yet aware that destiny was still unfolding.
One day, Devavrat would return.
And when he did, the fate of Hastinapur would change forever.
That child would later be known as Bhishma.
In the next episode, we will witness Devavrat’s return and the terrible vow that made him immortal in memory — the legendary Bhishma Pratigya.
