Together, they offer culturally grounded reflections supported by research, lived experience, and clinical insight.
As members of a community shaped by migration, resilience, faith, and the legacy of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, this conversation explores how healing can honor both our history and our future.
💬 In This Episode, We Discuss:
🔹 Can spirituality, prayer, and faith replace therapy?
We explore traditional Rwandan healing practices, the role of faith in modern religious contexts, and what research says about integrating spirituality with psychotherapy.
🔹 How do you find your identity between family expectations and those of your host country?
A thoughtful discussion on bicultural identity, integration, and how cultural hybridity can become a strength — illustrated through the analogy of cooking isombe.
🔹 Why is mental health so difficult to talk about in our communities?
We unpack stigma, cultural values of endurance, intergenerational silence, spiritual interpretations of distress, and the lack of culturally adapted services.
🔹 How do you support someone who refuses therapy?
Practical and compassionate approaches to respecting someone’s pace, reducing stigma, and exploring multiple pathways to healing.
🔹 How do we create emotional safety at home without teaching fear?
How to pass on history without projecting trauma — and why a parent’s emotional regulation is one of the most powerful lessons of safety.
🔹 What is intergenerational trauma and how do we begin to repair it?
We discuss:
The science behind trauma transmission
Biological and social pathways of inherited trauma
Whether healing must involve confrontation
The role of individual and community healing
How awareness and intentional care can shift generational patterns
🌿 Our Core Message
Spirituality and therapy are not opposites.
Healing is not weakness.
Identity is not a compromise.
Breaking generational cycles does not require blame — it requires awareness and intention.
Healing can begin with one person, but it grows stronger in safe, supportive communities.
