Ingredients
1 cup toor dal (arhar dal)
3 cups water
1 small onion (chopped)
1 tomato (chopped)
2–3 garlic cloves (chopped)
1 green chilli (optional)
½ tsp turmeric powder
Salt to taste
For Tempering (Tadka):
2 tsp oil or ghee
½ tsp mustard seeds
½ tsp cumin seeds
1–2 dry red chillies
A pinch of hing (asafoetida)
Few curry leaves (optional)

Method
Cook Dal: Wash toor dal well. Pressure cook with water, turmeric, and salt for 3–4 whistles until soft. Mash lightly.
Prepare Base: Heat oil/ghee, add mustard seeds. When they splutter, add cumin seeds, hing, red chillies, and curry leaves.
Add Veggies: Add garlic, green chilli, onion—sauté till golden. Add tomato and cook till soft.
Combine: Add cooked dal, mix well, and simmer 5–7 minutes. Adjust salt and water.
Finish: Switch off flame. Serve hot.
