I. Introduction The Experiment
In 1962 Walter Pahnke conducted the famous Good Friday Experiment.
He performed this research for his PhD thesis at Harvard University.
He investigated the link between psilocybin and mystical states.
Pahnke needed a rigorous framework to define these experiences.
Subjective stories were not enough to prove genuine mysticism.
II. How To Measure Mysticism
Pahnke faced the problem of defining the vague term mystical experience.
He created a classification system based on scholars like W.T. Stace.
This typology assumed core characteristics are universal to humans.
While cultural interpretations vary the core experience remains.
This 9 category scale became the rule to assess the subjects.
III. Pahnke's 9 Categories Of Mystical Consciousness
1. Unity
Pahnke considered Unity the most important.
Internal Unity involves the loss of usual sense impressions.
The subject feels a loss of self without becoming unconscious.
External Unity is perceiving an underlying oneness in the world.
It is the intuitive insight that All is One behind physical diversity.
2. Transcendence of Time and Space
Refers to the loss of clock time and spatial orientation.
Subjects may experience eternity or infinity outside of time.
3. Deeply Felt Positive Mood
The most universal elements are joy and blessedness and peace.
These are felt at an intensity far beyond normal human experience.
4. Sense Of Sacredness
This is a non rational response of awe in the presence of the holy.
Subjects feel profound reverence even without religious dogmas.
5. Objectivity And Reality.
This involves gaining insightful knowledge through direct experience.
Subjects feel they have encountered ultimate reality or truth.
6. Paradoxicality.
Descriptions of the state become logically contradictory.
An example is an empty unity that is simultaneously full and complete.
7. Alleged Ineffability.
Subjects insist that words fail to describe the experience.
Language is viewed as insufficient to communicate the event.
8. Transiency.
This refers to the temporary duration of the mystical state.
The peak level of consciousness eventually returns to normal.
9. Persisting Positive Changes In Attitude Or Behavior.
Pahnke emphasized a life enhancing mysticism measured by effects.
Changes toward self include integration and creativity.
Changes toward others include greater sensitivity and tolerance.
Changes toward life include a new sense of meaning and reverence.
